How to Use AI: A Simple Guide for Beginners
Updated October 2026
AI chatbots can explain homework, write a message, plan your week or think up a cool gaming name in seconds. If you've never used one, it can feel confusing. This guide keeps it simple: what AI is, how to start for free, how to ask good questions, and which tool fits you.

What an AI chatbot actually is
An AI chatbot is an app you talk to by typing, or by speaking. You ask a question or give it a job, and it writes back an answer in normal language. ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and Meta AI are the best-known ones. Using an AI chat feels like texting a very fast, well-read friend.
They learned from a huge amount of text, so they're good at explaining ideas, writing, summarizing and brainstorming. They are not people and they don't "know" things the way a friend does. Sometimes they sound confident and are still wrong, which is why the safety section below matters.
Step 1: Pick a free AI to start with
You don't need to pay anything to start. The easiest choice is the one that fits the apps you already use:
- Android phone or Gmail user: try Google Gemini.
- Windows laptop: Copilot is already built in.
- WhatsApp or Instagram all day: Meta AI is inside those apps, no new download.
- Want one good all-rounder: ChatGPT or Claude.
Download the app or open the website, sign in with your Google, Microsoft or email account, and you're ready. There's a full comparison table further down.
Step 2: Ask your first question
Type something real, the same way you'd ask a smart friend. For example: "What are 5 easy ways to save money as a student?" Read the answer, then keep the conversation going. You can reply with "make it shorter", "give me more examples" or "explain point 3 in simple words". That back-and-forth is where AI really shines.
Most apps also have a microphone button so you can talk instead of type, and a button to upload a photo or a PDF and ask questions about it.
How to write a good prompt
A "prompt" is just what you type. Short, vague prompts get short, vague answers. A good prompt usually has four parts:
- Task: what you want, like "write", "explain", "list" or "fix".
- Details: who it's for, what it's about, and anything it must include.
- Style: the tone, such as friendly, formal, funny or simple.
- Format: how long, and in what shape: bullet points, a table, 3 options.
| Weak prompt | Better prompt |
|---|---|
| "Write a bio" | "Write 5 Instagram bio ideas for a student who loves photography and travel. Friendly tone, under 100 characters, add 1 emoji each." |
| "Explain photosynthesis" | "Explain photosynthesis for a class 8 student in 6 short bullet points, then give one easy example from daily life." |
| "Gaming names" | "Give me 15 PUBG Mobile names based on the word Wolf. Max 12 letters, sounds tough, no numbers." |
If the first answer isn't right, don't start over. Tell it what to change: "shorter", "more funny", "use simpler words" or "give 10 more like number 4".
12 useful prompts you can copy
Copy any of these, change the details in brackets, and paste them into your AI app:
- Explain something: "Explain how solar panels work like I'm 12 years old, in 5 short points."
- Write a message: "Write a polite message to my teacher asking for one more day to submit my project. Keep it under 60 words."
- Study help: "Make 10 quiz questions with answers from this chapter: [paste text]."
- Summarize: "Summarize this article in 5 bullet points and tell me the main takeaway: [paste text or link]."
- Instagram bio: "Write 5 short Instagram bio ideas for a 19-year-old who loves gaming and football. Fun tone, under 100 characters each."
- Gaming name: "Give me 15 cool Free Fire names based on the word "Shadow". Max 10 letters, no spaces."
- Captions: "Write 8 short captions for a beach photo with friends. Mix funny and aesthetic."
- Translate: "Translate this into simple Hindi and keep the meaning friendly: [paste text]."
- Plan your day: "I have 3 hours after college. Make a simple plan to study maths, go to the gym and rest."
- Cook something: "I have eggs, onions, tomatoes and bread. Give me 3 easy recipes I can make in 15 minutes."
- Fix your writing: "Fix the grammar and make this sound more natural, but keep my style: [paste text]."
- Learn a skill: "Make a 7-day plan to learn basic video editing on my phone for free."
Use AI to make a stylish name or bio
AI is brilliant at ideas, but it often messes up special letters like π’π±πͺππΈπ or κ§ΰΌΊ ΰΌ»κ§. They can come out broken or as empty boxes. The trick is to use each tool for what it does best:
- Ask AI for name or bio ideas, for example "Give me 15 Free Fire names based on Shadow".
- Pick your favorite and paste it into the FilesSnap font generator.
- Choose a style from the Gaming, Cursive or Bold tabs, add decorations from cool symbols, and tap Copy.
For game names, check our guide on the best fonts for gaming usernames first, because some games block certain symbols. For Instagram, see how to change the font on your Instagram bio.
Which AI should you use? Free plans compared

All of these have a free version that's enough for most people. Paid plans mostly give you higher limits, newer models first and extra features. Prices below are the main paid plan in US dollars as of October 2026, and they change often, so check the official site before you pay.
| AI | Free? | Main paid plan | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Yes | Plus about $20/month | Everyday all-rounder: writing, ideas, images and voice chat |
| Google Gemini | Yes | Google AI Pro about $19.99/month | Android phones and Google apps like Gmail, Docs and YouTube |
| Claude | Yes | Pro about $20/month | Long writing, careful explanations and reading long documents |
| Microsoft Copilot | Yes | Microsoft 365 Premium about $19.99/month | Windows and Edge users, and Word or Excel if you pay |
| Perplexity | Yes | Pro about $17β20/month | Research answers that show their sources |
| Meta AI | Yes | Free | Quick help inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook |
Our honest advice: try two of them with the same question and keep the one whose answers you like more. They're all good, and the "best" one depends on how you use it.
The big AI tools, one by one
ChatGPT by OpenAI

OpenAI (often searched as "Open AI") is the company behind ChatGPT, the chatbot that made AI popular. Download the ChatGPT app or open chatgpt.com, sign in, and start typing. The free plan covers chat, voice, photo questions and a limited number of AI images. It's the best default if you just want one app that does a bit of everything.
Gemini AI by Google

Gemini AI is Google's chatbot. On many Android phones it's already installed, or you can open gemini.google.com and sign in with your Google account. Because it's made by Google, it fits nicely with Gmail, Google Docs, Maps and YouTube, and it can also create images for free.
Claude AI by Anthropic

Claude AI is made by Anthropic. People like it for clear writing, long explanations and reading big documents or PDFs. It can't make pictures, but it's strong at writing, summarizing and coding.
Claude AI login
To log in, go to claude.ai or download the official Claude app for Android, iPhone, Windows or Mac. You can sign in with your Google account or with your email, which gets a one-time login code. Always check the address bar says claude.ai before you sign in, because fake login pages do exist.
Claude pricing
There's a free plan for everyday chat. Pro costs about $20 a month ($17 a month if you pay yearly) and gives more usage and extra features. Max plans start at about $100 a month for very heavy users, and there are Team and Enterprise plans for companies. Prices can change, so check the official pricing page before you pay.
Copilot AI by Microsoft
Copilot AI is Microsoft's assistant. It's built into Windows 11 and the Edge browser, and also works at copilot.microsoft.com and in its phone app. The free version can chat, search the web and create images. If you pay for Microsoft 365, Copilot can also help inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Claude Code and the Claude API, for developers
If you don't write code, you can skip this part. These two are for programmers:
- Claude Code is Anthropic's coding assistant. It can read a whole project, explain it, write and fix code, and run commands for you. It works in the terminal, in code editors like VS Code and in the Claude app. It needs a paid Claude plan (Pro or higher) or an API account, and it isn't included in the free plan.
- Claude API lets developers put Claude inside their own apps and websites. You create an account in the Claude Console, make an API key, and pay only for what you use, priced per million "tokens" (pieces of words). Each model has its own price, and smaller models cost much less. OpenAI and Google have similar APIs for ChatGPT and Gemini models.
Treat an API key like a password. Never paste it on a public website, in a YouTube video or in a GitHub post, because anyone who finds it can run up a bill on your account.
AI image generator: make pictures from words
An AI image generator turns a text description into a picture. You don't need a special app: ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Meta AI can all make images for free, with a daily limit. Just type something like:
"A neon gaming logo of a wolf head, purple and blue, dark background, square format"
Tips that help: describe the subject, the style (cartoon, realistic, 3D, anime), the colors and the shape (square for profile pictures, tall for stories). AI images often get text and hands wrong, so if you need your name on a logo, make the picture with AI and add the text yourself using a stylish font. Don't use AI to make fake photos of real people, and check each app's rules before using images in ads or products.
AI humanizer tools: what "humanize AI" really means
An AI humanizer is a tool that rewrites AI text so it sounds more natural, or tries to hide that AI wrote it. You'll see lots of sites promising to "humanize AI" text in one click.
Be careful with them. Many schools, colleges and websites treat AI writing passed off as your own work as cheating, and humanizers don't make that okay. Their rewrites can also add mistakes or change your meaning. A better way to get natural writing is to write your own first draft, ask AI to "fix the grammar but keep my words and style", and then read it out loud and change anything that doesn't sound like you.
Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini: your questions answered
These are the questions people search for most about the big AI tools, answered in plain words.
What is Claude?
Claude is an AI assistant, a chatbot you can talk to by typing or speaking. You ask it something in normal language and it writes back, just like chatting with a person. It can explain topics, write emails and essays, summarize long PDFs, help with homework, plan trips and write computer code.
Think of it as a very well-read helper that's awake 24 hours a day. It isn't a person and it can make mistakes, so check anything important.
What is Claude AI?
"Claude AI" is simply the full name people use for Claude. The "AI" part means artificial intelligence: software that learned from a huge amount of text so it can understand questions and write answers. You can use Claude AI on the website claude.ai or in the Claude app for Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac.
Under the hood there are several Claude models, a bit like engine sizes. Smaller ones are fast and cheap, bigger ones are slower but smarter. On the free plan the app picks a good one for you, so beginners don't need to worry about this.
Who owns Claude AI?
Claude is made and owned by Anthropic, an American AI company based in San Francisco. Anthropic was started in 2021 by a group of researchers, including siblings Dario Amodei (the CEO) and Daniela Amodei (the President), several of whom used to work at OpenAI.
Big companies such as Amazon and Google have invested money in Anthropic, but they don't own Claude. Anthropic says its main focus is building AI that is safe and helpful.
Is Claude free?
Yes, Claude has a free plan. Sign up at claude.ai with your Google account or email and you can chat, upload files and photos, and ask questions without paying.
The free plan has a usage limit. If you send lots of messages, you'll see a note telling you to wait a few hours. If you hit that often, the paid plans give you more:
- Pro: about $20 a month, or about $17 a month paid yearly.
- Max: from about $100 a month, for very heavy users.
- Team and Enterprise: for companies.
Most beginners never need to pay.
Is Claude down?
If Claude isn't loading or keeps showing errors, here's how to check whether the problem is Claude or your phone:
- Check the official status page: open status.claude.com. Green means everything is working. If there's a problem, you'll see it listed there with updates.
- Check if others have the same problem: sites like Downdetector show when lots of people are reporting issues at the same time.
- If the status page is green, it's probably on your side: refresh the page, check your internet, log out and back in, try another browser or the app, or turn off your VPN.
- Check your limit: on the free plan, a "usage limit" message isn't an outage. You just need to wait until the time it shows.
Outages are usually fixed within minutes to a few hours. While you wait, you can use another AI like ChatGPT or Gemini.
Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
Neither one is better at everything. They're both top AI assistants, and the right choice depends on what you need:
- Claude is often preferred for: natural-sounding writing, long documents and PDFs, careful step-by-step explanations, and coding.
- ChatGPT is often preferred for: doing everything in one app, creating images, voice chat, and its huge number of users and add-ons.
Both have free plans and both cost about $20 a month for the main paid plan. The easiest way to decide is to ask both the same question and keep the one whose answers you like more.
What is Claude Code?
Claude Code is a tool for programmers made by Anthropic. Instead of just chatting about code, it can work directly on a software project: read all the files, explain how things work, write new features, fix bugs and run commands, while asking for permission before making changes.
It runs in the computer's terminal (command line), inside code editors like VS Code, and in the Claude app. It needs a paid Claude plan (Pro or higher) or a Claude API account, and it isn't part of the free plan. If you don't write code, you don't need it.
Can Claude generate images?
Not in the way image generators do. Claude can't create photos, paintings or realistic pictures from a description.
What it can do:
- Make charts, diagrams and simple graphics built with code, which you can then edit by asking.
- Look at images you upload and describe them, read the text in them, or explain a graph or a homework question.
- Write a detailed prompt you can paste into an image tool.
For real AI pictures, use ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Meta AI. See the AI image generator section above.
How to use ChatGPT?
- Open it: download the ChatGPT app from the Play Store or App Store, or go to chatgpt.com. Make sure the app is by OpenAI, because there are many look-alike apps.
- Sign in: use your Google, Microsoft, Apple account or email.
- Type your question in the box at the bottom and press send. Example: "Explain the water cycle in 5 simple points."
- Keep chatting: reply with things like "shorter", "in Hindi" or "give me 3 more examples".
- Try the extras: tap the microphone to talk, the + button to upload a photo or file, or ask it to "create an image of...".
Start a new chat when you switch topics. The prompt tips earlier in this guide work in ChatGPT too.
Who owns ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is made and owned by OpenAI, an American AI company in San Francisco. OpenAI was founded in 2015, and its CEO is Sam Altman. ChatGPT launched in November 2022 and became one of the fastest-growing apps ever.
Microsoft is OpenAI's biggest investor and partner, which is why OpenAI's technology also powers parts of Microsoft Copilot. But ChatGPT itself belongs to OpenAI, not Microsoft.
Is ChatGPT free?
Yes. ChatGPT has a free plan: you can chat, ask about photos and files, use voice and create a limited number of images. When you use a lot, it may switch you to a smaller model or ask you to wait for a while.
Paid plans give more usage and the newest features. In many countries, including India, there's also a cheaper plan called ChatGPT Go that sits between Free and Plus.
How much is ChatGPT Plus?
ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month in the US. In other countries the price is shown in your local currency and may include tax. In India it's roughly βΉ1,999 a month. The exact price appears in the app before you pay.
If $20 is too much, look at ChatGPT Go, which costs much less (it launched in India at βΉ399 a month) and gives more than the free plan. Heavy professional users can choose Pro, which costs much more. Always buy from the official app or chatgpt.com, never from resellers offering "cheap Plus accounts".
How to cancel a ChatGPT subscription?
Cancel it in the same place you paid:
- Paid on the website (chatgpt.com): click your profile picture β Settings β Account or Subscription β Manage β Cancel subscription, and confirm.
- Paid on iPhone (App Store): open the iPhone Settings β tap your name β Subscriptions β ChatGPT β Cancel Subscription.
- Paid on Android (Google Play): open the Play Store β tap your profile picture β Payments & subscriptions β Subscriptions β ChatGPT β Cancel.
Good to know: you keep Plus until the end of the month you already paid for, and deleting the app does not cancel the subscription. Cancel at least a day before your renewal date.
Is Gemini an air sign?
Yes. In astrology, Gemini (β) is an air sign, together with Libra (β) and Aquarius (β). Air signs are linked with thinking, talking, ideas and being social. Gemini is ruled by the planet Mercury, the planet of communication, which is why Geminis are often described as curious, chatty and quick-witted.
Fun fact: Google's AI shares the same name. Want the sign in your bio? Copy it from here: β, and find more decorations on our cool symbols page.
What is a Gemini?
The word Gemini has a few meanings, depending on where you saw it:
- Zodiac sign: a Gemini is someone born roughly between May 21 and June 20. The symbol is β, the Twins, and it's the third sign of the zodiac. Geminis are traditionally described as curious, talkative, adaptable and fun, with two sides to their personality.
- Google Gemini: Google's AI assistant, the chatbot explained earlier in this guide. You can use it at gemini.google.com or in the Gemini app.
- The word itself: "Gemini" is Latin for "twins". It's also the name of a star constellation and of a famous 1960s NASA space program.
What AI gets wrong, and how to stay safe

- It can make things up. AI sometimes gives wrong facts, fake quotes or links that don't exist, and sounds sure about it. Check anything important.
- It can be out of date. Prices, news and sports scores change fast. Ask for sources, or look it up.
- Keep private things private. Never paste passwords, OTPs, bank or card details, or ID numbers. Don't share other people's private information either.
- Big decisions need a real expert. For health, money or legal questions, use AI to understand the basics, then talk to a doctor, adviser or lawyer.
- Follow school and work rules. Many schools allow AI for learning but not for writing your whole assignment. Use it to understand and improve your own work.
Quick tips for better answers
- Give context: "I'm a beginner", "this is for Instagram", "my exam is tomorrow".
- Ask for a format: "in a table", "in 5 points", "under 100 words".
- Ask for options: "give me 3 versions" and pick the best.
- Ask it to check itself: "Are you sure? What might be wrong in your answer?"
- Start a new chat when you change topics, so old details don't mix in.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI free to use?
Yes. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Perplexity and Meta AI all have free versions. You only pay if you want higher limits or extra features, usually around $20 a month.
Which AI is best for beginners?
Start with the one that fits the apps you already use. Gemini is easy on Android and with Gmail, Copilot is built into Windows, Meta AI lives inside WhatsApp and Instagram, and ChatGPT is a good all-rounder. You can try a few for free and keep the one you like.
Can AI understand Hindi and other languages?
Yes. The popular chatbots understand and reply in Hindi, Hinglish, Portuguese, Spanish and many more languages. Just type in the language you want the answer in, or ask it to reply in that language.
Is it safe to use AI?
It's safe for everyday tasks, as long as you don't share passwords, bank details, ID numbers or private information about other people. Treat AI answers as a helpful first draft, and double-check anything important.
Can AI make fancy fonts for my name?
AI is great at suggesting name ideas, but it often makes mistakes when it tries to write special Unicode letters. A better way is to get the idea from AI and then turn it into a stylish font with a font generator like FilesSnap.
Will AI replace Google search?
Not completely. AI is better at explaining things and writing, while search is better for finding the newest information and official websites. Many people now use both, and some AI tools can search the web and show their sources.
How do I log in to Claude AI?
Go to claude.ai or open the official Claude app, then sign in with your Google account or your email address, which gets a one-time login code. Make sure the website address is really claude.ai before you sign in.
How much does Claude cost?
Claude has a free plan. Claude Pro is about $20 a month, or about $17 a month paid yearly, and Max plans start at about $100 a month. Developers using the Claude API pay per use instead. Check the official pricing page for current prices.
What is the best free AI image generator?
ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Meta AI can all create images for free with daily limits. Gemini and Copilot only need a Google or Microsoft account, so they're an easy place to start.
Do AI humanizer tools work?
They can make AI text sound smoother, but they often add errors, and using them to pass off AI writing as your own can break school or work rules. Editing your own draft with AI's help is the safer way.
