1Type your text

Type a word or a short line. We used Glitch Mode. Short text works best, because glitch effects get messy fast.

The Glitch tab opens by default. Scroll to Zalgo glitch for a light creepy look, or Zalgo heavy if you want it really chaotic. Strikethrough and underline are near the top.

What is glitch text?

Glitch text is normal text with extra marks piled on top of it, so it looks broken, corrupted or a little haunted. The best-known version is called Zalgo text, the messy, dripping style you've probably seen in creepy memes and horror posts. It works by stacking lots of tiny accent marks above and below each letter.

This page also does the calmer cousins of glitch text: strikethrough, underline, double underline, overline, slashed letters and a wavy line. They all use the same trick, adding special marks to your letters, so they keep their look when you paste them.

Zalgo glitch or Zalgo heavy?

Zalgo glitch adds a few marks to each letter. Your words are still readable, but they look a bit off, which is perfect for a spooky username or a dramatic caption.

Zalgo heavy piles on more marks. It looks properly cursed and can spill over the lines above and below. It's fun for a one-word reaction, like a creepy "hello", but it can be annoying in a busy chat, so use it with a bit of care.

The other glitch effects

Strikethrough crosses your words out, which is great for jokes ("I am n̶o̶t̶ tired") or showing an old price. If that's all you need, pick the Strikethrough card at the top of the Glitch tab.

Underline and double underline help you highlight a word in apps that have no underline button.

Slashed, overline, dotted and wavy add a glitchy edge without going full Zalgo.

Hearts, stars and dots between letters aren't really glitchy, but they're a cute way to space out a short word.

Where glitch text works

Discord: Zalgo and strikethrough are popular in Discord names and messages. Some servers use bots that remove unusual characters, so don't be surprised if it gets cleaned up.

TikTok and Instagram: a glitchy word in a caption or bio fits horror, gaming and edgy aesthetics. Try it on one word rather than the whole bio.

Halloween posts and creepy stories: this is where Zalgo really shines.

Things to know before you paste

Every mark counts as a character. A short word in Zalgo heavy can use up a surprising amount of a character limit, so check the counter if your app has one. Some apps also cut off or squash the extra marks, so the effect can look a little different from one place to another.

And please don't use glitch text for anything important. Screen readers struggle with it, and people who use them may hear a long string of strange sounds instead of your words.

Frequently asked questions

What is Zalgo text?

Zalgo text is the creepy, "corrupted" style where letters look like they're dripping or breaking apart. It's made by stacking lots of tiny accent marks above and below each letter. You can make it with the Zalgo glitch and Zalgo heavy styles on this page.

How does strikethrough text work?

A special line character is added after each letter, so your text looks crossed out wherever you paste it. No formatting buttons needed.

Will glitch text work on Discord?

Usually, yes. Discord shows Zalgo and strikethrough just fine. Some servers have bots that clean up unusual characters, so if your text disappears or gets simplified, that's probably why.

Why does my glitch text look different in another app?

Each app decides how much space to give those extra marks. Some cut them off, some squash them together, and some let them spill over other lines. It's the same text, just drawn differently.

Does Zalgo text use more characters?

Yes, quite a lot more. Every mark counts as a character, so a short word in Zalgo heavy can be several times longer than it looks. Keep that in mind for bios and usernames with a character limit.

Is the glitch text generator free?

Yes, it's completely free. No sign-up, no watermark, and your text never leaves your browser.
