These styles are Unicode characters, so they keep their look when you paste them. Only English letters (A–Z) and numbers are converted. These styles do not work on Hindi (Devanagari) text.

Cursive capital letters

Cursive capitals are the most decorative part of the alphabet. Many of them don't look like their print versions at all, which is why people often search for them one by one. A few to know:

Capitals look great at the start of a name or a short word, like 𝒮𝒶𝓇𝒶 or ℒℴ𝓋ℯ. Using only capitals in cursive is hard to read, so mix them with lowercase.

Cursive lowercase letters

Lowercase cursive is what most words are made of. In handwriting, these letters join together with small connecting strokes. Teachers often group them by how they start:

Learning letters in these groups is faster than learning A to Z in order, because each group shares the same first movement.

How to write in cursive by hand

If you want to learn real handwriting, not just copy and paste, follow these steps:

  1. Use lined paper with a dotted middle line, so you can see how tall each letter should be.
  2. Hold the pen loosely and tilt the paper slightly. Cursive letters lean a little to the right.
  3. Start with the round letters (a, c, d, g, o, q), because they all begin with the same curve.
  4. Practice each letter 10 times, then join two letters, like "an", "it" or "el".
  5. Write short words without lifting the pen, then add the dots on i and j and the crosses on t and x at the end.
  6. Learn capitals last, once the lowercase letters feel easy.

Ten to fifteen minutes a day is enough. Most people know every letter within one to two weeks.

Cursive vs other fancy letters

Cursive isn't the only stylish alphabet. Here is how it compares with other popular styles:

If you can't decide, cursive is the best choice for names and short messages, and bold is better for anything people need to read quickly.

A short history of cursive

The word cursive comes from the Latin currere, meaning "to run". Joined-up handwriting was developed so people could write quickly with a quill or pen without lifting it from the paper. For centuries it was the normal way to write letters and documents. Today many schools teach it less than before, but lots of people still learn it for signatures, journals, cards and calligraphy, and cursive letters are more popular than ever online.

Frequently asked questions

How many letters are in the cursive alphabet?

26, the same as the normal English alphabet. Each letter has a capital and a lowercase cursive form, so there are 52 cursive letters in total.

How do I copy cursive letters?

Tap any letter in the table on this page to copy it, or tap Copy under a full alphabet line. To turn a whole word or name into cursive, type it in the box at the top and copy the Script style.

What is the hardest cursive letter?

Many people find capital Q, capital G, capital Z and lowercase r and s the hardest, because they look very different from print letters. Cursive capital Q, for example, looks a lot like the number 2.

Are there cursive numbers?

Unicode has no cursive digits, so numbers stay normal next to cursive letters. If you want numbers to stand out, use bold numbers from the bold text generator.

What does cursive mean?

Cursive comes from the Latin word currere, meaning to run. It describes handwriting where the letters flow and join together so you can write quickly without lifting the pen.

How long does it take to learn cursive?

Most people can learn every letter in one to two weeks with 10 to 15 minutes of practice a day. Writing smoothly and quickly takes a few weeks more.

Can I use the cursive alphabet on Instagram?

Yes. Copy cursive letters from this page and paste them into your Instagram name, bio, captions or comments. They also work on WhatsApp, TikTok and Discord.

Why do some cursive letters look different from others?

A few letters, like B, E, H and e, come from an older Unicode block, so they can look a little thinner or rounder than the rest. That's normal and they still copy and paste fine.
